A Wine That Takes No Prisoners

Sit down with your copy of Sophisticated Living (or read online by clicking here) and pour yourself a glass of wine that takes no prisoners… The women-led winemaking team at The Prisoner Wine Company is continuing a tradition crafting blends that aren’t shackled to traditional winemaking.

From its inception in 1997 by founder Dave Phinney, The Prisoner Wine Company has aimed to do things differently. And it started outside of the bottle. Phinney understood that labeling was an essential factor. It attracted the consumer’s eye. So Phinney picked an arresting image of a prisoner drawn by Francisco de Goya for the labels - talk about a stand out! And it doesn’t stop there.

Phinney sold the company to powerhouse Constellation Brands, handing the reins over to Chrissy Witman and Niki Williams. The duo’s personal journeys to end up in these roles were as unique as the labeling on the product itself. Niki grew up right here in the Midwest, in an Illinois farming community. Chrissy worked at an independent environmental chemistry lab. One thing led to another, and now they are redefining the wine industry.
