Houska Gallery’s misuri & BAJA BLAST Exhibitions Blow Through with Opening Reception on Friday

by Grayling Holmes

Charlie Houska opens his doors for two other luminaries in the St. Louis art scene this Friday at an opening night reception. As per usual, art lovers will pour through the doors of the Houska Gallery, which is located in the smart, chic Central West End. Wine, conversation, and art will color the night as artists Nick Schleicher returns to HOUSKA Gallery along with Sam Meléndez for his first solo show.

With a much anticipated new body of work, Nick’s BAJA BLAST exhibition is sure to wow. Refining and gently experimenting with his signature color field canvases, the series delves into the emotional, empathetic presence of imperfection in Schleicher's paintings.

Many of Nick’s works serve as personal markers, created during periods of profound loss or significant transition. The imperfections - congealing paint on the edges, canvases slightly askew, the improvisation of the mark-making process - imbue the works with a sense of empathy and are essential components of his practice. It’s through these inconsistencies and nuances that the paintings acknowledge discomfort, but those moments are transformed into something new, more beautiful, and endlessly playful. He currently lives and works in St. Louis where he is a member of Monaco USA.

Sam Meléndez misuri exhibition combines his love for all things vintage and bright colors from his home, Puerto Rico, in his work. Evidence of his process is an integral component of his paintings, creating an authentic personal narrative alongside the subject he depicts. For this reason, the grit that charcoal marks leave behind and the notes he makes while sketching the pieces are important to the final compositions. "I love the combination of the raw, black and white of the charcoal and bare canvas contrasted with the super bright colors I work with." Sam's piece "Autumn" was featured in St. Louis Magazine as one of 6 works by St. Louis artists that Design STL's edit team would like to display at home. Sam currently lives and works in St. Louis.

If is this is the first or hundredth time you’ve attended an opening at Houska, Charlie welcomes you with open arms. Expect the work of the artists to exhibit at his space to embrace your mind and spirit. For the night, their works arrest your eyes with and captivate your artistic fancy.

The BAJA BLAST and misuri opening receptions for these exhibits is from 5-8pm this Friday, May 17th. The exhibit runs through the 5th of July.

This exhibition is hosted by HOUSKA Gallery, 4728 McPherson, STL, 63108. They welcome your visit during regular business hours, Tuesday - Saturday, 11 am - 4 pm, or private viewing by appointment.
