A Sophisticated Guide to Holiday Season 2024
by Grayling Holmes
Soon, and very soon.
The stockings will be hung by the chimney with care.
The eight candles on the menorah will be lit.
The seven candles of the principles of Kwanzaa will burn.
Carolers will fill the sidewalks and malls with melodies hearkening the season and filling hearts with joy.
Shoppers will fill the stores and keyboards will be afire filling retail coffers with cash to keep our economy humming and gifts-a-flowing.
Ice skaters, tree lightings, sledders on Art Hill will commence.
All manner of plays, cinematic premiers for all to enjoy with those we hold dear.
Restaurants, pubs, and sundry purveyors of holiday treats will pepper the landscape.
The Winter solstice will be celebrated with the Germanic Yule festival and Roman Saturnalia.
Carriages will sojourn over the river and through the woods of Downtown St. Louis, St. Charles, and elsewhere. It will be so much fun to ride in that one-horse open sleigh.
The partridge will hang in the pear tree for the twelve days of Christmas.
The ball will drop from Times Square with almost three thousand glimmering crystal triangles heralding the New Year.
No matter how you choose to observe it, it’s time to celebrate the season of mirth. Following are some sophisticated ways in which you can celebrate what most consider the best time of the year.

especially when it comes to food. Sure, burnt ends and toasted ravioli hold
a special place in our hearts, but they merely scratch the surface of the
Show Me State’s vibrant culinary landscape. Here, fine dining rubs elbows
with casual comfort food, farm-fresh ingredients find their way onto gourmet
plates, global influences add a vibrant spice to the mix, and our wines,
craft brews, and spirits make perfect pairings. Whether you’re a lifelong
Missourian or just passing through, the pages of the Missouri Comfort
cookbook will inspire you to try new things in your kitchen, dive deeper
into the state’s food culture, and hit the road to sample the best of what
Missouri offers in every region. Seasoned cooks and beginners are invited to
join Chef Matthew Unger and travel and food writer Porcshe Moran Murphy on a
delicious statewide adventure filled with recipes, stories, and
recommendations for top places to eat and drink. This appetizing exploration
traverses history and the present day, from bustling urban centers and
energetic college towns to charming villages and everywhere in between.
