Northwestern Mutual Clayton recently hosted its annual fundraiser, ‘Cocktails for a Cure,’ to raise money for childhood cancer research. All proceeds will be donated to long-time partner Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) to further research for childhood cancer and support families affected by a diagnosis. This year’s event raised $110,000, funding approximately 2,200 hours of childhood cancer research.  “Although more than 1,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with childhood cancer every day, less than 4% of federal funding is allocated toward childhood cancer research,” said Steve Gross, managing partner of Northwestern Mutual Clayton. “We’re honored to bring our community together for this event to support a cause that affects so many – in hopes of finding a cure, better treatments and a brighter tomorrow.”

The event held at Barnett On Washington had more than 350 attendees and included live entertainment as well as remarks from Kaylee Muertz, a local teenager impacted by ASLF. Kaylee was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in December 2019. Over the past 10 years, Northwestern Mutual Clayton has raised more than $500,000 for ALSF.

“The partnership with Northwestern Mutual has helped push the boundaries of cancer research, bringing us closer to a reality where no child or their loved ones have to endure the pain of cancer,” said Liz Scott, Alex’s mother and co-executive director of ALSF. "While this mission can seem daunting at times, Alex’s belief that 'we can do it’ if we all work together continues to inspire us."

In addition to the support of the Clayton office, Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation, has funded more than 700,000 hours of research to accelerate the search for better treatments and cures for childhood cancer and contributed more than $60 million to the cause overall. About Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of 4-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Scott, who was fighting cancer and wanted to raise money to find cures for all children with cancer. Her spirit and determination inspired others to support her cause, and when she passed away at the age of 8, she had raised $1 million. Since then, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement. Today, ALSF is one of the leading funders of pediatric cancer research in the U.S. and Canada raising more than $250 million so far, funding over 1,000 research projects and providing programs to families affected by childhood cancer.
